THE NIGHTS OF DISCIPLESHIP

The Program for Nights of Discipleship - J13

PHASE I:
Night 1:
God Loves The Disciple
On this evening, we explore how God first initiates a relationship with us. He who's very BEING is LOVE, invites us to enter into a living, unfolding relationship with Him. We explore our identity and nature as God's beloved children received at our baptism.

Night 2: The Disciple Loves God
On this evening, we explore the consequence of the realities explored in the previous meeting. God initiates and invites us into a loving relationship, and we in turn in FREEDOM respond to this invitation by choosing to LOVE GOD in return. We also talk about the importance of prayer as a way to maintain this relationship with God.

Night 3: The Disciple Loves His/Her Neighbor
Having entered into a discussion of God's relationship with us, the vertical dimension, God asks us in turn to reach out to our neighbor, the horizontal dimension. We as God's Children are called to love and serve our neighbor. We explore who our neighbor is, and to what manner we are called to reach out to them in LOVE.

Night 4: Obstalces To Loving and Serving Our Neighbor [Brokenness and Sin]
Despite the call to love and serve our neighbor, we acknowledge that there are difficulties in fulfilling this task. We come to understand that we have all been hurt by others or by ourselves. We also talk about the reality that none of us are perfect and that we all struggle to LOVE and be LOVED.

Night 5: Strength For the Journey: The Evangelical Counsels 1 - POVERTY
The next three nights will focus on the evangelical virtues that enable a disciple to truly love and serve God, neighbor, and self. This night we speak about the need for a POVERTY in SPIRIT, a spirit of detachment from things that sometimes burden or over-occupy our lives to the degree where we are significantly hindered in loving and serving fully. We also discuss the reality that sometimes our identities, affirmations, and purpose are derived from the things we posses and/or work(career) when they should come from God.

Night 6: Strength For the Journey: The Evangelical Counsels 2 - CHASTITY
LETS TALK ABOUT SEX BABY! This evening we will talk about how the virtue of chastity allows us to be in right relationship with one another.

Night 7: Strength For the Journey: The Evangelical Counsels 3 - OBEDIENCE
This night we speak about the need for the vitrue of OBEDIENCE as a spirit of detachment from our own personal goals, dreams, plans, and agendas to open us to the truth of who God wants us to be, how God wantes us to live, and where God desires for us to go.

Night 8: Mission and Evangelization: The Call of Our Lord to Share the Faith

Night 9 : Priesthood and Religious Vocations by Fr. Jim Forsen
Fr. Jim Forsen Serves as the Priest Vocation Director for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the person who created the Nights of Discipleship Program. This night he spends time with the group to share with us about his ministry and invite us to open our hearts and hear the Lord's call.

Night 10 :Disciples on the JOURNEY
This evening is our last official gathering of the Nights of Discipleship ending PHASE I. We will evaluate where God as taken us thus far on the journey. We will also assess and evaluate what has worked and what hasn't worked in our meetings to encounter God's love.
